GE and 10GE Ethernet over the WAN

AMCC's Ethernet over WAN solutions enable service providers to provide low cost Carrier Grade Ethernet services over Metro and Core SONET/SDH and OTN Networks. Ethernet services over the Wide Area Network are an important revenue opportunity for Service Providers with significant growth prospects. By leveraging proven SONET/SDH and data transport expertise, AMCC has been able to deliver turn-key production - ready Ethernet over WAN (EoWAN) solutions to its customers. AMCC is accomplishing this difficult task of merging enterprise data protocols and next-generation, standards-compliant SONET/SDH and OTN technology in our VOLTA and RUBICON product families, both of which are in production today.

The VOLTA family of OC-48/STM-16 and OC-192/STM-64 multi-protocol mappers utilize Virtual Concatenation (VC) and Generic Framing Procedure (GFP) for the optimized transport of Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and Storage Area Network (SAN) protocols over SONET/SDH Metropolitan networks.

The VOLTA family of devices collapse the functionality that is implemented today using several Application Specific Standard Products (ASSP) or Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC), Field Programmable Grid Arrays (FPGA) and discrete serial transceivers into single devices, achieving at least four times the density available in comparable solutions.

This complete VOLTA line card on-a-chip solution integrates complex digital logic and transceiver functionality without compromising flexibility. Each one of VOLTA's 10 multi-rate client interfaces can operate "Any Service on Any Port (ASAP) at Any Time." In addition, these client interfaces support the widest spectrum of enterprise protocols ever implemented in a single device, including Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel FC-100 and FC-200, Enterprise Systems Connection (ESCON), Fibre Connection (FICON) and Digital Video Broadcast (DVB), which can be mapped onto SONET/SDH using standards-compliant VC and GFP.

The RUBICON family of Forward Error Correction (FEC) products provides the most complete set of 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) LAN mapping capabilities.

In addition to its full set of SONET/SDH and OTN mapping and monitoring blocks, Rubicon also provides six distinct manners in which to encapsulate and transport 10GELAN signals, including the only commercially available solution for transporting 10GELAN at full rate over a 10.7GHz OTN-compliant network. In addition to this manner of transport, Rubicon also allows for full rate transport of 10GELAN at the expanded rate of 11.1GHz (while still keeping the OTN frame structure). Finally, Rubicon offers the capability to pause back the 10GELAN client to allow for 10.7GHz transport of the 10GELAN signal. The Rubicon also allows for GFP encapsulation of a 10GELAN signal. It is the most complete 10GELAN mapping product targeted for transport applications available on the market today. The enhanced Forward Error Correction (EFEC) capability of the Rubicon device, with its 8.6db of EFEC coding gain, has been well proven out in active networks on AMCC's previous generation FEC chip. In conjunction with AMCC's DispersionXX(TM) physical layer technology, the Rubicon family provides the longest reach without regeneration, dramatically reducing power, maximizing performance and lowering overall system costs for service providers.
