Linley Tech Seminar: High-Speed Interconnects

May 14, 2008

DoubleTree Hotel, San Jose, CA
Seminar: 9:00 - 5:00 pm (approximate)

Reception, exhibits, and raffle immediately

On May 14th, The Linley Group will present a one-day seminar that explores the latest products and technologies for PCI Express, RapidIO, 10G Ethernet, DisplayPort, HyperTransport, and other leading interconnects

Issues on 10GBase-KR and Beyond for 100Gbps Backplane Connectivity and  scalability - Subhash Roy, CTO, Transport Products, AMCC
Aggregation requirements within the network and increased computing power in the data center are driving the need for 10Gbps ports. In modular systems, these 10Gbps ports need to be connected through a high-speed backplane. This presentation will focus on the issues and tradeoffs for building next-generation equipment where backplane connectivity needs to scale to 10GbE and beyond.

When designing a replacement for their PMC-based Eagle radar scan converter product, Curtiss-Wright's engineers were faced with some tough component selection choices in order to meet objectives. Using the combination of an embedded processor and an advanced FPGA device offered computing performance and small size within constraints of power dissipation, ruggedness and budget that was needed to create a competitive new product. The AMCC PowerPC440GX running at 533MHz proved to be the ideal choice of embedded processor for this application.

AMCC’s Power Architecture processors and evaluation kit provide the highly reliable features, performance and functions we require for our FlexTCA management system,” said Manish Singh, Vice President of Product Line Management at Continuous Computing. “The easy-to-use evaluation kit helps us to drastically reduce development time while enabling significantly lower development costs, which benefits both Continuous Computing and our customers as well.

The biggest problems in the NAC space are (1) inability to protect branch and remote offices, (2) complexity requiring infrastructure upgrades, (3) heavy six digit price tags and (4) inability to protect against the real criminals and malicious insiders who refuse to install trust agents. We've solved all of these problems with this new appliance and couldn't have done it without the help of AMCC and their Power Architecture based embedded processor, said Gary Miliefsky, Founder & Chief Technology Officer of NetClarity, Inc.

"AMCC's Power Architecture storage processors provide the features and functions we require to implement our multi-protocol SAN routers," said Shishir Shah, Vice President and General Manager of Storage Solutions Group at QLogic. "AMCC's PowerPC 440SP empowers QLogic SANbox intelligent storage routers to deliver cost-effective SAN connectivity with high performance and high availability iSCSI and Fibre Channel Ports.

"The performance gained from the AMCC storage processor is quite significant,"said Frank Hu, Director of Product Strategy at Accusys. "AMCC's PowerPC 440SP simply empowers Accusys controllers to deliver higher performance by saturating and utilizing 100% of the fiber channel bandwidth. This is certainly critical with the deployment of 4Gb FC and 3Gb SAS solutions in the storage market. And it took only about three weeks to get the controller running. That is very fast compared to other development experiences."

"The power of the AMCC PowerPC 440SP enables all of the complex RAID operations to be performed efficiently and smoothly with very little impact on other applications," said Jemmy Lai, Manager of Product Strategy at Accusys. "This is very important so that our customers can recognize the value of our new storage management features. They can immediately employ the ease of use and flexibility when they can manipulate various RAID configurations and allocate storage resources with little impact to normal operations.
The 10GbE PHY is a critical component in our new high density switching platform, therefore we had very strict selection guidelines," noted Mike Yang, General Manager and Vice President of Quanta Computer, Inc. "AMCC met all of these requirements with their understanding of the high density system challenges, the performance of the chip and their turnkey solution. They were big differentiators in helping us meet our overall project cost, scheduling and performance guidelines.

Customers today are focused on achieving higher performance at lower power levels in ever-smaller form factors," said Rick Maule, CEO and president, NetEffect. "The SFP+ adapter is the most recent addition to our family of 10Gb accelerated Ethernet adapters, all of which have demonstrated an ability to meet the most stringent data center requirements for networking, storage and clustering. The AMCC QT2025 was a natural choice to make this form factor possible.
AMCC's S19252 provides the features, integration, and functions we require for Optium's new small form factor tunable product," said Tom Williams, Director of Product Line Management for Optium Corporation. "AMCC's S19252 empowers Optium to deliver cost-effective SFF MSA compliant products with high performance and high availability.

Tehuti Networks is extremely pleased to expand its long-standing relationship with AMCC through our SFP+ adapter offerings," said Blaine Kohl, vice president of marketing, Tehuti Networks. "These adapters provide customers the flexibility of selecting an optics module that best meets the target application while offering space and power savings over XFP adapters.

AMCC 3WARE 9650SE HONORED AS EE TIMES "ULTIMATE PRODUCT OF THE YEAR" AT
2008 ACE AWARDS
SATA II RAID Controller Leverages 3ware RAID Architecture for
Performance and Data Availability

SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 22, 2008 - Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (AMCC) [NASDAQ-GS: AMCC], a global leader in embedded Power Architecture(tm) processing, optical transport and storage solutions, today announced the 3ware(r) 9650SE RAID controller was named "Ultimate Product of the Year" by EE Times at its Annual Creativity in Electronics (ACE) Awards Gala held at San Jose's Fairmont Hotel. The winning AMCC 3ware RAID controller is designed to accelerate RAID 6 performance. The 3ware 9650SE dramatically reduces the RAID 6 write penalty, inherent in competing offerings, by uniquely processing parity calculations simultaneously rather than consecutively. Barbara Murphy, Senior Vice President and General Manager for AMCC Storage accepted the award. "We are privileged to accept this prestigious award from EE Times," said Murphy. "Winning the ACE Award validates AMCC's unequivocal commitment to provide high-performance, scalable RAID storage for direct-attach vertical storage applications." "RAID is a mainstay for the majority of storage environments," said Junko Yoshida, Editor-in-Chief of EE Times. "AMCC received the Ultimate Product of the Year for Logic, Interface and Programmable Logic because of its superior performance and dynamic RAID architecture."
